Urbex Presentation
Robert MacAskill recently gave an engaging presentation on urban exploration photography to Focus Photography Club. As an experienced urban explorer, Robert specialises in photographing abandoned buildings, forgotten industrial sites, and hidden urban landscapes, capturing the beauty in decay and dereliction. During his talk, he highlighted the unique challenges of shooting in these environments, such as navigating hazardous conditions, low light, and restrictive spaces. His presentation also touched on the thrill of discovering new places and the stories embedded within the structures, emphasizing that urban exploration is as much about history and preservation as it is about photography.
Robert shared many of his most striking images with the club, offering insights into his creative process. He explained how he uses lighting and composition to evoke a sense of mystery and nostalgia, bringing life to otherwise forgotten spaces. His images often feature peeling paint, rusted metal, and overgrown vegetation, demonstrating the passage of time. His attention to detail and the careful balance between light and shadow brought a haunting beauty to the scenes he captures.
Throughout the presentation, Robert encouraged aspiring photographers to take their own steps into urban exploration, while emphasising the importance of safety and respect for the spaces they enter. He underscored the ethical considerations, advising the club to avoid damaging locations or taking anything from the sites they visit. His passion for both photography and urban history was contagious, leaving our members inspired to see their own towns from a fresh, adventurous perspective. Robert’s talk not only showcased his impressive portfolio but also opened the door to new possibilities for creative exploration in urban photography.
