It’s a Small World, After All

Our latest practical session was nothing short of thrilling, as members turned their lenses toward some truly captivating creatures. The session featured an exotic array of species, including tarantulas, jumping spiders, leaf insects, praying mantises, giant snails, a scorpion, and a charming bearded dragon. Each creature presented unique challenges and opportunities, from capturing the iridescent glint of a tarantula’s fur to the intricate camouflage of leaf insects blending seamlessly into their surroundings. The setting was thoughtfully arranged, ensuring optimal lighting and varied perspectives to inspire creativity among photographers.

The stars of the evening were undoubtedly the charismatic subjects. The bearded dragon, with its calm demeanour and striking scales, became a favourite for portrait shots, while the scorpion, under continuous and flash lighting, revealed its glowing exoskeleton, offering a surreal photo opportunity. Members marvelled at the delicate features of the praying mantises and the sheer tenacity of the tiny but energetic jumping spiders. The tarantulas, with their dramatic poses and textured appearances, added a touch of the dramatic. The variety and accessibility of the subjects ensured there was something for everyone, from macro photography enthusiasts to those just starting their journey in nature photography.

A heartfelt thank you is due to Debbie, whose generosity in bringing along this incredible collection of creatures made the evening possible. Her expertise in handling and presenting the animals ensured a safe and enjoyable experience for both the members and the animals. Debbie’s knowledge added depth to the session, as she shared fascinating facts and insights about each species, enriching the understanding of participants and fostering a deeper appreciation for these remarkable beings.

As the evening wrapped up, the buzz in the room was palpable, with members sharing their favourite shots and exchanging tips on macro lenses, lighting, and composition. The practical session was a perfect example of how hands-on experience can inspire creativity and enhance skills. It left our members not only with memory cards full of stunning images but also with a newfound admiration for the small wonders of the natural world.
